New Quinnipiac Headwoman Begins in 2010On January 1st, 2010, Mrs. Ruth Duncan Mahweeyeuh-Thunderhorse, at age 75, steps down as the Quinnipiac Headwoman and passes along her traditional obligations to her daughter, while retaining the inherited role of Sunksquaw. Shalini Squayo-Piressiwa (Red-Raven) Mahweeyeuh-Bhargava (daughter of Iron Thunderhorse and Little Owl/Ruth Thunderhorse) takes over the position of Quinnipiac Headwoman officially on January 1st, 2010. She will receive a number of hereditary traditional gifts from her Mother and Father as visual/symbolic emblems of her power, authority and sovereignty.A necklace of red coral beads holds a pendant of the carved head of a red-raven. It was created by Dancing Crow of the ACQTC Sub-Sachemship Wampanoag Band of Nova Scotia. A traditional Princesses Headdress of etched and painted leather holds seven wild turkey feathers and represents the Seven Aboriginal Clan Lineages with the Thunder Clan at its center. The Thunder Clan Talking Stick gives her the right to speak on behalf of ACQTC and both her Father and Mother. The Headdress and Talking Stick were co-created by both her Mother and Father. The Quinnipiac New Year begins on the first quarter moon in the month of March (Hakenah-Kesos/Goose-moon) which falls on March 8th this year. At the annual Quinnipiac Sequan/Spring Social (March 19 to 21, 2010) Princess Red Raven will be honored and she will officially welcome all invited guests, elders, allies etc. from that day forward until she too passes on the role. Shalini Red-Raven lives in New York State with her two sons Divinder/Big-Thunder and Rishi Little Thunder. She now becomes the official voice of ACQTC, Spokesperson for the Quinnipiac Tribal Council, Messenger for the Wappinger Mattabesec Confederacy. While learning her role from her Mother she will also be trained in the ancient ways of Long-Water-Land Shamanism by her father Iron Thunderhorse.
